Creative Process
Every commission is developed through a clear, three-phase creative process that balances artistic vision, technical planning and project management with practical delivery. Projects can be realised through handmade, digital or hybrid approaches, depending on the site, context, scale and budget.
While my work is artist-led, I enjoy working collaboratively with clients, communities and project partners where this meaningfully supports a project. Social engagement and co-design are integrated when appropriate, particularly for public, community and education-facing commissions.

Phase 1 — Design & Development
Each project begins with a period of research, consultation and concept development. This stage focuses on understanding the site, the brief, the narrative context and the practical constraints of the project.
This phase may include:
- site visits and spatial analysis
- visual research and mood boards
- sketching and concept proposals
- digital mock-ups and layout planning
- material testing and sampling
- budget and production planning
- project scheduling and delivery planning
For projects involving co-design or community engagement, this phase may also include workshops, conversations or creative sessions to gather ideas and stories that inform the final artwork.
The outcome of this stage is a clearly defined artwork concept, agreed materials, an outline production plan and a confirmed budget.
Phase 2 — Production
Once the design is approved, the project moves into production.
Depending on the brief and materials selected, this may involve:
- hand-cut and assembled mosaic using glass, ceramic or porcelain tiles
- digital artwork preparation for printed and fired ceramic or porcelain tiles
- mixed-media elements combining handmade and digital processes
- fabrication of panels or modular sections for off-site assembly
Material choices are made with careful consideration of:
- durability and longevity
- interior or exterior placement
- maintenance requirements
- environmental conditions
- budget and timescale
Where appropriate, alternative materials such as aluminium and aluminium composite (Dibond) or other substrates may be used to realise digitally produced imagery in a more cost-effective way, particularly for large-scale or external applications.
Throughout production, clients are kept informed with progress updates and visual documentation.
Phase 3 — Installation & Completion
The final phase focuses on installation, finishing and handover.
This may include:
- on-site installation of mosaic panels or tile systems
- final grouting and surface finishing
- fixing to architectural or landscape structures
- coordination with builders, contractors or site managers
- health and safety planning where required
- on-site project coordination
Each installation is carefully managed to ensure the artwork is:
- securely fixed
- visually aligned with the site
- finished to a high standard
- ready for long-term use
At the end of the project, clients receive a completed artwork along with care and maintenance guidance where relevant.
Materials & Approaches
Projects can be realised through a range of materials and processes, including:
- handmade mosaic in glass, ceramic and porcelain tiles
- digitally printed and fired ceramic or porcelain tiles
- mixed-media and hybrid approaches
- aluminium composite (Dibond) panels for digitally produced imagery
- site-specific or modular panel systems
Material selection is guided by the project’s context, scale, budget and intended lifespan.
Collaboration & Social Engagement
For projects where community involvement is appropriate, I offer socially engaged and co-designed approaches.
These may include:
- creative workshops
- design and making sessions
- storytelling and consultation activities
- collaborative making processes
These approaches allow participants to contribute meaningfully to the creative direction while maintaining a clear, artist-led vision and a high-quality final outcome.
Budgets, Timescales & Delivery
Every commission is bespoke, and budgets are shaped around the scale, materials and complexity of each project.
I work transparently with clients to:
- define realistic budgets
- align creative ambition with available resources
- agree clear timescales and milestones
- plan installation logistics
Where appropriate, alternative materials or production methods can be proposed to meet budget constraints without compromising visual impact or durability.
I also provide project coordination and delivery management to ensure artworks are completed smoothly, on schedule and to a high standard.
From Idea to Installation
Whether you’re at an early idea stage or ready to commission, I’m always happy to talk through possibilities and help shape a project from concept to completion.
